GUYANA AMAZON TROPICAL BIRDS SOCIETY
Our partner the Guyana Amazon Tropical Birds Society goes from strength to strength. One of the goals of the GATBS is to educate the public about birds and bird conservation. The Society has been particularly successful in reaching at-risk youth. Since its official registration in May 2005, the Society has inspired over 80 youths to join as members and devote their time and energy to conservation.
The GATBS plays a very important role in collecting base line data, monitoring bird populations and protecting bird habitats. All of this information has been shared with the tourism sector to enable tourism businesses to function more responsibly.
Upper Demerara Rapid Assessment Programme
With the support of the Greenheart Trust the GATBS recently carried out a rapid assessment of the birds of Upper Demerara. They obtained important new data and recorded 105 species. A copy of the completed and authenticated list will be posted on our website. The GATBS team also recorded the impact of mining and logging and will continue to monitor this area.
Scarlet Ibis Monitoring and Training Session
There is only one roosting site for Scarlet Ibis in Region 4 (Upper Demerara) Guyana. With the support of the Greenheart Trust the GATBS has been monitoring this site and the bird population. The Society has also used this monitoring exercise to train student naturalists in observation and monitoring techniques.

The GATBS is credited with the discovery of a breeding pair of Festive Parrots (Amazona festiva) in Georgetown. This is the first time that the birds have been sighted in the capital city and the Society continues to monitor them.
